When the bubble mailer wins

• High-value orders — when a claim or a chargeback would hurt, full tracking is worth $3. Many sellers draw the line somewhere between $20 and $50.
• Graded slabs and toploader stacks — they can't ship as letters at all (thickness/rigidity).
• Marketplace protection requirements — some platforms require tracked shipping above certain values.

When the letter wins

• Raw singles and lots under your tracking threshold — the vast majority of TCG orders.
• Bulk and playset orders — a pocketed letter carries up to 50 cards; that's a $1.69 ship on an order that would cost $4.50+ boxed.
• Anywhere margins are thin — on a $8 playset, shipping choice IS the margin.

The catch with a plain white envelope — and the fix

The classic PWE has two real problems: zero protection (loose cards shift, corners ding) and surcharge roulette (a taped cardboard sandwich can go rigid and eat the ~46¢ non-machinable fee, or worse, get reclassified as a package).
