eSE exists because low-value cards and package rates don't mix. A $6 card in a $5.50 tracked bubble mailer is a shipping bill nobody wins; a plain envelope is cheap but gives the seller nothing to point at when a buyer files "item not received." eSE splits the difference: letter-mail economics with a scan trail and a protection plan attached.
It's a domestic, eBay-only service for small, flat, lightweight items in specific categories — trading cards (Pokémon, MTG, sports and the rest), plus the likes of coins, stamps, postcards and stickers. It's aimed at low-value orders: per eBay's current published rules it's intended for items around $20 or less (community guidance cites up to $50 for combined orders — confirm in the label flow). Sell the same card on TCGplayer or through a Facebook group and eSE isn't on the menu; it only exists inside eBay's label system.
eBay's own pitch for the service: tracking and shipping protection "for about a dollar." The label price steps up by weight to the service's 3 oz cap; the exact per-ounce figures live inside the label flow and drift with USPS rate changes — seller write-ups from mid-2025 quoted $0.74–$1.32 — so treat the label flow, not any blog post (including this one), as the price of record. Now the part that surprises new sellers: eSE tracking is not package tracking. An eSE piece is metered letter mail. It rides through USPS letter sorting with everything else, and the "tracking" is scans picked up along the way — eBay itself describes it as integrated, limited tracking. Practical consequences, straight from seller experience:

eSE rides on USPS letter mail, so the piece has to physically qualify as a letter. Per eBay's current published requirements — confirm the live version in the label flow:

Flexibility and uniform thickness are the two rules that actually bite. The envelope has to bend and run through automated letter sorting. The classic failure is a toploader taped in the middle of a #10: the piece goes rigid, sorting machines reject it, and it comes back — or arrives postage-due. Inconsistent USPS handling of borderline-rigid eSE envelopes has been one of the longest-running seller complaints with the service, to the point that eBay ran test mailings to figure out what packaging survives. Rigid mail that does get through can also draw USPS's non-machinable surcharge (~46¢). The fix is boring: flexible protection (cardstock, not corrugated board, not a brick of toploaders) and cards spread flat so no spot exceeds the thickness limit.

Weight is rarely the constraint — thickness is. The uniform-under-0.25" rule effectively caps how tall any one stack can be, no matter how light the envelope stays. On the numbers themselves, per eBay's published guidance as sellers quote it: no more than 15 raw cards per envelope, no more than 2 cards in toploaders, and no graded cards. Treat those as the working caps and confirm current limits in the label flow.
The clearest signal of what eBay actually wants is its own supply kit. eBay's Trading Card Envelope Kit is a #10 envelope with a cardboard stiffener and a 3-pocket insert rated for up to 24 cards — 8 per pocket, center pocket first, then spread evenly across all three. TCGplayer's own near-identical 3-pocket kit carries the same 24-card, 8-per-pocket rating, and its FAQ notes 24 cards comes in around 3 oz. The design lesson from both: don't stack cards — spread them flat so the envelope stays uniform and flexible end to end.

Letter rates effective July 12, 2026: $0.82 (1 oz) / $1.11 (2 oz) / $1.40 (3 oz) / $1.69 (3.5 oz max). Stamps: one Forever ($0.82) plus three Additional-Ounce stamps ($0.29 each) = $1.69 covers the max. Two Forever stamps ($1.64) is 5¢ short.
Verdict by use case. One cheap card sold on eBay, buyer wants to see movement: eSE — you get the scan trail and protection for roughly what the stamp alone would cost.
